Radiation is energy
traveling through space. While
all matter is composed of energy and emits its
own respective wavelength (radiation), some
wavelengths
are more dangerous than others.
Types of radiation
Cosmic radiation consists of
radiation in a range of
wavelengths (long-wave infra red to short
wave-length
ultraviolet. Sunlight is an example of cosmic
radiation.
Short term exposure to sunlight is harmless, but
long term exposure can pose a serious health
threat.
Microwave radiation
This type of radiation is a low frequency
wave-length.
Typical examples of microwave radiation include
electrical devices such as TV, toasters, hair
dryers,
computers, refrigerators, cell phones, microwave
ovens, electric lightbulbs, etc. Short or long
term
exposure to microwave radiation can cause health
problems.
Ionising radiation
is a higher wavelength of radiation which is used
in medicine (X-ray, cancer/radiation
therapy,etc.). We are also exposed to it in low
doses from space, the air, and from the earth.
This form of radiation can cause damage to
matter, particularly living tissue. Exposure to
high levels of ionising radiation can be
dangerous, so it is necessary to control
exposure. Nuclear radiation is the most
destructive of all radiation, since it destroys
the body's DNA, all living creatures,
and renders a fatal blow to the environment.
